Ack, Stop slurping so loud!

I love learning about new things.
Today in the New York Times I learned of a condition called misophonia.  People with the condition are sensitive to sounds of people eating, their reactions range from annoyance to uncontrollable rage.  I can only imagine a misophone's reaction to an udon shop; where it's considered rude not to slurp.

  1. That is my favorite dish! What is in the middle of that onigiri with the jam-like spot?

  3. I like to slurp when I eat noodle soup or drink certain liquids but I hate hearing other people do it (slurp)....it is annoying!

  4. Hi! I just wanted to comment because I have had misophonia my whole life and never knew what to call it until I read this blog, and it's amazing to know that there are others like me, so thank you!! You've probably changed my life. I also want to say that the way in which mine manifests is anger/rage and annoyance when hearing others smacking lips/making "tch" (clacking) tongue noises. Strangely enough, I have no problem with slurping! When I last visited Japan, I actually enjoyed visiting udon shops because the loud slurping noises covered up any other noises I hated! Just thought that was interesting.

  5. I have misophonia too and must say the slurping does bother me, a lot. But only when in a small group. When you're out in a restaurant or ramenshop you also have ambient noises and people talking, which cancel out a lot of the noise. I hate the chewing sound the most, actually. Crunch-sounds don't bother me, and like Pratyeka the smacking/clacking/'swooshing' (in mouth-)sounds bother me most. Slurping is not really high on the list compared to others. Maybe because it is so obvious?

Those udon make me hungry, btw T_T

  6. @Pratyeka - Wow! Your very welcome. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with misophonia. I'm happy to hear you survived eating in an udon shop - I had it imagined it to be the worst kind of torture.
